If You Are Suffering from Fibroids then Vitamin D may help you relieve some of Your Symptoms.
What are Fibroids?
Fibroids are benign muscle growths in the uterus that occur in more than 50% of women and are symptomatic in at least half of the women who have them.
You may or may not know whether you have fibroids so I will list the symptoms for you:
- Excessive uterine bleeding
- Pelvic pain with intercourse
- Pelvic pressure,
- Bladder pressure
- Constipation
- Chronic miscarriage
- Infertility
- And Pregnancy complications like preterm birth
Many people are told they have fibroids by their gynecologists but if they don’t’ cause symptoms like those above they are not treated. They can be diagnosed by your gyn during a pelvic exam, or by a pelvic ultrasound.
Doctors know that both estrogen and estrone cause fibroids to grow, so women who are not menopausal or are menopausal and taking HRT in any form are at risk for the growth of fibroids.
At BioBalance we slow the growth of fibroids with anastrazole a medication that decreases estrone production, one of the hormones that stimulates growth in fibroids. However, researchers are always trying to find other ways to suppress the growth of these benign masses which will then decrease symptoms and the need for hysterectomy, which is the only definitive treatment for fibroids.
Other treatments are surgical, but not as drastic as hysterectomy. One or two fibroids can be treated with a radiologist blocking the blood flow to the fibroid under XRAY guidance. Depending on the place in the uterus the fibroid grows sometimes they can be removed through a one-day surgery under laparoscopy. Hysteroscopic removal under anesthesia is also available for fibroids close to the lining of the uterus. However, these treatments are area approved by insurance only if the fibroids are causing considerable pain and bleeding.
Why Vitamin D?
The new information I have for you is that in the research that has come about through finding another treatment option for women is being done with the vitamin, Vitamin D.
It is a fact that women with low Vitamin D levels have more fibroids and more severe symptoms. Researcher now have found that treating women with Vitamin D to achieve a healthy level which in my preventive world is a blood level of 60-100, will cause fibroids to stop growing or to prevent them from occurring at all!
How and why does Vitamin D work?
#1 Vitamin D is an anti-inflammatory vitamin. Fibroids grow in an inflamed environment. Obesity causes very high inflammation and growth of fibroids. Women who are obese and lose weight often shrink their fibroids. Since Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory it works to control the expansion of fibroid masses.
#2 When Vitamin D levels are low, enzyme systems in the body do not work optimally. Fibroids are growths that have no “off” signal so while they are out of control they continue to grow. They are not cancer, so they don’t develop abnormal cells or spread outside of the uterus.
So, Vitamin D slows the multiplication of muscle cells in the fibroid, it also encourages fibroid cells to stop dividing and therefore stop growing. It also encourages abnormal cells to die. In general Vitamin D is an anticancer vitamin when optimal levels are maintained.
Vitamin D decreases the growth of scar tissue so the fibrous tissue in the fibroid stops multiplying.
#3 Blood vessels are necessary to allow fibroids to grow. Vitamin D decreases the number of blood vessels to the fibroid.
How did Researchers come up with these findings?
Researchers combined the knowledge about Vitamin D and the factors that make fibroids grow and did some studies on animals. The animal studies confirmed the fact that optimal Vitamin D levels controlled the growth of fibroids and slowed or stop the growth and symptoms of uterine fibroids.
After that they confirmed their discovery on humans and found that Vitamin D did slow or stop the growth of uterine fibroids, the question is still whether taking Vitamin D and maintaining an adequate level of Vitamin D can prevent fibroids.
They also found that every woman responds to Vitamin D in their own individual way. So it is not necessarily a medication that can promise remission of fibroids.
What can we do with this Information?
My recommendation for premenopausal women who make their own estrogen and postmenopausal women who have their estrogen replaced is to take Vitamin D 5,000 units daily and get their blood level of Vitamin D to between 60-100 ng/dl.
If you have uterine fibroids, or you have precancer or cancer, Vitamin D is key to treating these problems. VITAMIN D IS NOT THE ONLYT TREATMENT BUT IT MAKES CURRENT TREATMENTS MORE EFFECTIVE! IF YOU HAVE FIBROIDS, DON’T STOP YOUR DOCTOR’S TREATMENT! ADD VITAMIN D TO YOUR LIFE.
What other Mainstream treatments are used to control the growth of fibroids?
GYN doctors don’t treat fibroids that are not causing symptoms, however, if you have any of the symptoms listed above the treatments go like this, usually in this order:
- Control and lower estradiol and estrone levels by placing patients on birth control pills. Yes, BCPs create an environment that is lower estradiol than what a woman produces on her own. Some patient will require ALL of their estrogen suppressed with Lupron or another medication similar that puts women into menopause.
- Mirena IUDs are perfect for placing progesterone right next to the fibroids and the uterine lining to suppress the growth of fibroids.
- Natural bio-identical progesterone (Not Provera-it is not safe) opposes the growth of fibroids. Often women with fibroids who have bleeding have this controlled by addition of nightly bioidentical progesterone 100-200 mg at bedtime or cyclic progesterone
- Weight loss with new GLp-1 and GIP medications to decrease peripherally produced estradiol in the fat, decrease inflammation and stop the fibroid growth.
- Testosterone pellets with anastrozole decrease estrone, the primary stimulation of fibroid growth.
When none of the medical treatments work, Surgery is necessary
Surgery options, includes hysteroscopic removal of a solitary fibroid next to the uterine lining; laparoscopic removal of fibroids located on the outside of the uterus, or surgical removal of the fibroids or the uterus itself, a hysterectomy. All of these require general anesthesia.
Other treatments can be sought out like radiologic ablation of the blood flow feeding he uterus. That is done by a radiologist under local anesthesia.
Most of us would agree that prevention with all the methods listed above and Vitamin D 5,000 units a day is preferable to surgery!
Warning about Vitamin D
As much as Vitamin D seems like a miracle treatment for fibroids, it has risks. You should not overdose on Vitamin D. It can cause so serious problems. Unlike most other vitamins, Vitamin D is not water soluble, so it can build up in your body and too much of oil soluble vitamins is not healthy!
My second recommendation is that even though you get some Vitamin D from the sun, as you tan you absorb less and less of Vitamin D. Very tan, Brown and Black people absorb almost no Vitamin D from the sun. When I initially test Vitamin D on a person who is very dark, I generally find an extremely low D level which puts then at risk for fibroids and cancer.
Summary:
Supplementing Vitamin D to women with fibroids of the uterus and cancer is vital to bringing them into a healthy state. Don’t stop other treatments, just add Vitamin D (over the counter) . Choose a formula that is medical grade and have your doctor check your levels. It is my clinical opinion, findings of preventive medicine groups and my experience of 40+ years in medicine that ideally the Vitamin D level should be over 60 and under 100.
