Science and Obesity and You

What science does and does not know about obesity.

I believe that you have to find the cause or causes of the obesity and treat each issue.  There may be many issues that all need attention to conquer obesity in an individual person.

B: What are the causes of OBESITY?

  • Emotional problems
  • Genetics
  • Food: Poor quality
  • Bad habits= no exercise, poor food choices, stress causing immobility
  • Food: Excess amount
  • Food: wrong food for your genetic needs
  • Choosing the wrong exercise for you
  • Metabolic abnormalities
  • Hormone deficiencies

Dr. Maupin: Because achieving ideal weight is not a one size fits all process, we will review all the factors and review some treatments that may work for you.

At BioBalance we review all these areas and treat one issue at a time until we develop an individual plan.

Brett Newcomb: Emotional obesity is turning to food to make you feel less Depressed, Anxious, lonely, or hungry for love.

Emotional obesity can be caused by significant authority figures who don’t meet your emotional needs and or shame you for your size or other elements.  The cure for that can be to decide to let those people go and know that their approval is not necessary, and that you have to only find approval for yourself.  You cannot learn to fill the empty place in your soul by eating and filling it with food.

Sometimes it takes the death of the critical person (parent, teacher, doctor) to cure the anger that these people create in our lives. When we dismiss them from our lives or they die, we are released from the need to fill our emotional needs with food!

The cure for Emotional Obesity is to change your emotional need for food into another activity that doesn’t involve eating like:

  • Artistic activity
  • Exercise
  • Religion
  • Community service = PETA or Feeding the poor

Kathy: Genetic Obesity is a new diagnosis that we can test for to see if we have the obesity genes.  If you have the obesity gene your system will gain more weight with each calorie than the average person, so you get more “miles per gallon” and if you don’t exercise enough to use up these calories you gain fat.

The cure is to lower the number of calories (especially processed food) and speed up your physical activity during a day to burn calories so that you never have extra.  The worst part of this is that you become more and more “efficient” at maintaining your weight as you gain fat.  This causes insulin resistance and eventually diabetes Type II.

The cure for this is to know that you were dealt a bad hand of cards in your metabolism, and you need to adjust prevent weight gain.  You can also go to a doctor who understands this type of disability.
